ABCs & 123s

Oh my goodness, is time flying by!!!  I think these pictures are from last week, but better late than never.  I just can't keep up with the days😂.

Some playground magic shows

Listening for our "shepherd's" voice while navigating obstacles in our way among all the noise around us helps us get to the other side.

REPORT CARDS - Your child's report card is ready for you!  Those should be live for your viewing now in Power School.  If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.  Thanks!

MATH FACT PRACTICE - Just a reminder to be spending your 10 minutes of daily practice with the multiplication facts now.  We are using those facts daily and any extra practice we get makes our work in the classroom easier.

ABCs & 123s

"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing."  These words have been heard in our room daily in the last couple of weeks.  Over three lessons, students discovered that the images David used — green pastures, still waters, paths of righteousness — had very specific meaning based on what real shepherding looked like in the rocky, dry land of Israel. They learned that God provides for us one step at a time, and that His goodness actively pursues us wherever we go. It was a pure pleasure to see how the students have observed God providing "green pastures" in their lives💚.

Here's some questions you can use with your child at home to follow up to what we learned in school:

1. This unit took Psalm 23, a passage you might have heard before, and showed what it actually looked like on the ground in Israel — rocky hillsides, sudden floods, narrow trails. Did any of those details change the way the psalm sounds to you?

2. Your learner learned that God provides just enough for the next step, not everything at once, the same way a shepherd leads sheep from one small patch of grass to the next. Is that easy or hard for your family to trust? Why?

3. Jesus described Himself as the Good Shepherd — one who knows His sheep by name and lays down His life for them. What does it mean to you that Jesus knows you personally, not just as part of a group?

4. The psalm ends with the word that means God's goodness is actively chasing after us — not waiting for us to find it. Where have you seen God's goodness pursuing your family lately?

5. The three lessons covered the shepherd, the green pastures, and the paths of righteousness. Which image from Psalm 23 means the most to you right now, and why?

MATH MINUTES HOMEWORK - This coming week we will be switching from addition and subtraction to multiplication for our math fact practice at home, so please be sure your child makes that change.  The mad minute will be all multiplication facts, so it is understandable if your child's score drops a bit this first week.  As they spend time daily practicing the facts, we will see their scores rise (if not, we need to check on their method of practice and suggest something that yields better results😉).  Thank you!

SCIENCE - We started learning about God's design of plants and people in our new science unit, Built for Survival.  It has been fun to invite Maestra Damsteegt into our classroom to teach us this uint.  We will continue this for four weeks total.

KINDERGARTEN BUDDIES - We are excited to share some food and fun with our kindergarten buddies over the next few weeks.  First, we have a candy corn activity planned for this coming Wednesday.  If you get to the store between now and then and would be willing to send in a bag or two of candy corn, we'd greatly appreciate that!  Secondly, we are planning a friendship feast on November 23.  Mrs. Bos has created a sign-up genius with a list of ingredients we will need for our feast.  Take a look and see if/how you can help out.  Thanks for your help!

DO THE HEW! - If you received a kit of energy saving supplies from the Think Energy presentation we had a couple weeks ago, there was a form called the HEW (Home Energy Worksheet) that came home with it that same day.  That paper is important!  Essentially it is just a survey for the company to see how much of the kit is getting used by families (honest answers are all that are required - there are no wrong answers😊, and FYI - the whole back side is optional!). But more importantly, returning that form earns our class money (like $100!).  We've already decided we want to buy some cool prizes for the auction at the end of the year, so please help us meet our quota by completing that either on-line or on the paper.  Bonus - every student whose family completes that form, earns a cool color changing pencil!  If you've lost/thrown away your copy, please use this link to complete it on-line ASAP.  Use teacher ID: 378058.  Thank you!  If you've already completed it, a big THANK YOU to you too!  I appreciate your attention to this matter!

PAPERS THAT COME HOME - I do my best to send home much of your child's classwork so you can see how they are doing.  I try to include notes on their papers to encourage them, redirect their thinking, or push them to think deeper or take another look at something.  Please take time to go over your child's papers with them to celebrate their successes, and to seize opportunities to help them keep thinking/learning on that topic.  I also trust that those notes and papers will help you get a feel for how your child is doing with grade level expectations.  I will be working on report cards in the coming week (they will be ready by Friday the 30th), and if you're keeping an eye on your child's work, that should be an indication of what you will see on their report card.  Thank you for investing this time in your child's education!

ABCS & 123s

Thank you for the conversations already had at Parent/Teacher Conferences, and those still to come next week. I TRULY do value partnering with you to do the job assigned to us of growing these kids in the grace and knowledge of our Savior!  This is BIG work we do, and I don't take that responsibility lightly.  It was so affirming to me to sit with you and be able to celebrate these kids that God has put in our care.  Thanks so much for all your support!

Practicing spelling our word work words with every jump

We learned a lot in the dunes on Monday!

Think Energy!

Recorders - Just a reminder to be sure to tend to the green note that came home on Thursday regarding ordering a recorder for music class.  Mrs. Reitman needs those orders back by the Monday right after break, Oct. 19.  Feel free to send it in sooner if you're worried about forgetting it - your child can give it to me for safe keeping.  Thanks for your help!

Reading Forts - Tuesday afternoon sounds like a perfect time to enjoy some reading in forts - please send along a sheet or lightweight blanket to aide in our construction process.  Each child may also take EITHER a pillow OR a stuffed animal that is no larger than their backpack.  Thank you!

Scheduling - Please remember that there is no school for the students on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday while the teachers spend time learning together at the Great Lakes Unity Conference.  I hope you enjoy some extra family time together over the break.

Homework - Due to the abbreviated week next week, I will not be sending out new reading and math minutes, and we will not have a word work test either (although I will send the new list home on Monday and you can have it in your possession for two weeks prior to our next test on October 23).  Please do encourage your child to keep the facts fresh, and to keep reading a bit everyday anyway, even though they do not have to record their time. Expect those things to resume on Monday, October 19.

THINK! Energy - On Friday we had our Think! Energy with SEMCO program and your student brought home a free energy efficiency kit to help you save energy and water unless you opted out.

  • Please install the items you need and give things you cannot use to a friend or family member.  There are installation instructions inside the kit. (If it were me, I would scan the QR code for videos rather than reading the instructions.😉)

  • Help us earn funds for classroom supplies by doing a short survey called the Home Energy Worksheet (HEW) used to improve the program. Please complete the HEW by Friday, Oct. 23 by returning the paper to me or completing it online at https://thinkenergy.org/semco/hew with my ID number: 327691.

  • No kit? If you opted out of taking a kit, you can still benefit from the program. Do the energy audit from the program website at https://thinkenergy.org/semco/audit.

PICTURE RETAKE DAY - If your child missed the first picture day, or you are unhappy with the first round of pictures, plan for retakes first thing on Monday morning, October 19 (that's the first day back after break)!  Old picture packets need to be returned that day if you are doing retakes.

ABCs & 123s

A couple birthdays to celebrate again this week - admission into the double digits club for these cool dudes!

Lots of special friends in our room yesterday - so much LOVE in one place💗!  (Please accept my apologies - I know I missed a few pics of our special visitors, but I did get quite a few!)

Exploring how we can change the shape and size of waves.

Lots of good reading practice going on these days!

DUNE STUDY FIELD TRIP - On Monday we will be traveling to Spring Lake to participate in a 2-mile dune hike to explore the changes to land over time.  This trip is hosted by the Ottawa County Parks & Recreation Commission.  They are asking a few things of us:
   1. Make sure your child has a good breakfast before the field trip. We will expend a lot  of energy hiking outside on the trails and climbing the dune stairs.
2. Be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the variable weather conditions found  at Lake Michigan. Conditions are often windy and cooler than nearby locations away from the lake. Dressing in layers is best as children can peel off an outer layer if they get warm or put one back on if they get cold.
3.  Pack a sack lunch with a drink. Also, pack a separate small backpack (like a sling bag) with a snack and water bottle - your child will carry this on the hike. The lunch will stay on the bus while we hike.
4. Children should wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. This way they can explore without worrying about poison ivy, prickles, mosquitoes or stubbing their toes. They may want to apply sunscreen to their face and arms, depending on the forecast. Sunglasses or a hat may also be helpful - but only send them if they will be helpful😉.
5. Be prepared to climb 200+ steps up and down stairs.

THINK! Energy - We are excited to welcome a guest teacher from the THINK! Energy program next week Friday.  She will be teaching us about wise energy use & conservation.  Part of the program is a kit of energy efficient items (shower head, pipe insulation, LED nightlight, faucet aerators, etc.) that each child receives for free.   There will be a home energy worksheet (HEW) for you to fill out about how you use (or don't use) the kit.  Completion of that form will earn our class money to spend on Amazon.  Please be sure to keep track of that form and fill it out by the indicated date.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES - I'm greatly looking forward to celebrating your child at conferences starting on Thursday.  Please be sure you have signed up for a time slot.

GUEST TEACHER - I will be spending the next few days in Nashville.  While I am away from school on Monday and Tuesday, Mrs. Bouws (a frequent Rose Park substitute) will be teaching our class.  She has subbed often for me, and has had children in my class so she knows the ins and outs quite well.  It should be a seamless transition between the two of us.  I will be back on Wednesday.

ACADEMIC NOTES -

  • Bible - We are spending our days with David in the desert as he tried to avoid Saul's pursuit (1 Samuel). We've observed his trust in God, his respect for God and his anointed, as well as his rollercoaster of emotions which he eloquently displays in many of the Psalms that we have been reading. Through those Psalms, we're learning that no emotion is too big for God to handle!
  • Math - We are entering into a unit where we are learning to multiply two-digit numbers.  This is BIG work!  We are excited to be maturing into "big kids" math.
  • Science - We have been thoroughly enjoying exploring "codes" used to send messages (morse code, binary code).  Now we are beginning to explore the waves that carry the codes from one place to another.
  • Reading - We've enjoyed putting to use all the skills we've been learning already this year as we read our first story from our reading book.  We're taking time to carefully decode new words, explore new vocabulary, contemplate the author's purpose and message, identify the characters traits and motivations, while still reading fluently and with good comprehension.  We're making FULL use of our time!😁
  • Writing - We are developing realistic fiction stories that take place on the International Space Station.  We are letting the creative juices flow as we develop a character and plot events in anticipation of putting all of these ideas together into our own piece of writing!
