Please take a moment to get to know Miss Heinlein, our Hope student this semester!
Dear parents and families,
Hello! My name is Katelyn Heinlein, and I am a senior at Hope College who will be serving in Mrs. Vanderzwaag’s classroom. What a privilege and a blessing it is to be a part of Holland Christian! In the classroom, I will be helping out with daily activities, teaching lessons, working with students one-on-one and in small groups, and helping with anything they may need. I am so excited to get to know Mrs. Vanderzwaag and her students. God has amazing plans for each of them!
A little bit about me is that I am from the town of Dewitt, Michigan, which is not too far away from Holland. I have grown up in Michigan my whole life and love going up north with my family! I am so blessed by my wonderful parents, who love to live out their faith in the Lord as well as to serve others. I also have a twin sister who has such a beautiful heart and is my best friend. I have a younger brother who is so loving and caring to anyone he meets. And, I can’t forget about our dog, Charley, who brings us so much happiness! A few things that I enjoy are watching Lake Michigan sunsets, going for walks, learning how to play the guitar, reading my Bible, and listening to worship music. I also really enjoy working with children, as they are fearfully and wonderfully made children of God and created in His image! When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to be a teacher’s aid in the kindergarten classroom and it was truly such an amazing experience! In addition, I had the opportunity to shadow a kindergarten teacher and was so grateful to her for having me in her classroom. While at Hope College, I have also been able to help out in the classroom through my other field placements, as well as work alongside students in helping them with subjects such as math or reading. During my time here at Hope, I am studying elementary education with a focus on pre-kindergarten to third grade. I can’t wait to see all that the Lord has in store as I trust in Him!
I am so grateful to Mrs. Vanderzwaag and her class for having me
and I pray for a semester and a year full of joy as we glorify God in
all that we say and do!
God’s Blessings,
Katelyn Heinlein
Here's what's coming up this week in the academic world:
BIBLE - We are moving into a unit on the Judges. We will explore the cycle of sin that the Israelites found themselves in: Sin -> Enemy -> Repent -> Deliverer -> Peace
WORD WORK - We will again get a new, individualized list on Monday, practice over the course of the week, and then test on Friday.
MATH - We are practicing becoming experts at multi-digit addition and subtraction. All the math fact practice your child does at home GREATLY assists them in being successful with this skill. Thank you for supporting your child with this! Those will always be due on Mondays.
READING - We have finished all our beginning of the year assessments and are now settling into our routines. When we aren't reading independently at our reading spots, we are participating in small group reading lessons.
WRITING - We are beginning a unit on Realistic Fiction. We are exploring some ideas for stories that we have in order to find one that we can create a masterpiece out of.
GRAMMAR - We are learning about four different types of sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory.
ORCHESTRA - Mr. Nester, our orchestra teacher, will meet with us on Monday to introduce the idea of orchestra to the students. Look for a note to come home with more information.
THINK! Energy - We are excited to welcome a guest teacher from the THINK! Energy program in a couple weeks. She will be teaching us about wise energy use & conservation. Part of the program is a kit of energy efficient items (shower head, pipe insulation, LED nightlight, faucet aerators, etc.) that each child receives for free. If you DON'T want to receive this kit, please email me or send back the blue opt-out paper this coming week (before Friday the 19th). Most families are happy to have it, or they pass on any unwanted items to friends and relatives, but if you don't wish to get the kit at all, just let me know. Thank you!
SCIENCE - Your children may excitedly have told you about our current studies of layers of rock and how they form over time. We are using the Pictured Rocks to base much of our inquiry on. As we begin to dig into this exploration, we will encounter views about the age of the earth (you may notice this on a worksheet or two that come home). While HC does not have an official “stance” on the age of the earth, per se, our approach to both science and the Bible is rooted in the Reformed conviction that God makes Himself known through His Word and His World. These two major forms of revelation will never truly conflict, though they also have largely different scopes. Out of respect for these different scopes, we are comfortable engaging God’s World through the process of making observations, collecting data, and building models (the processes of science). Our science curriculum engages general data that largely reflects significant process in the formation of the earth (though that doesn't necessarily exclude literal 6 day perspectives--ex: the idea that God created the world with the appearance of age, etc.). In our classroom, I make sure to preface our studies by alluding to the varying view points that exist regarding this topic. I humbly acknowledge to the students that my human brain cannot understand God's processes and design. But I do know that God created this world, the layers of rock, and the fossils in them according to His perfect plan. Beyond that, I am grateful that our families are part of the church - home - school triangle. Each family may wish to continue this conversation at home, in conjunction with the views taught at their church. As our children grow, they will encounter data about the age of the earth in society (museums, books, documentaries), and they will need to be able to place that information into their beliefs. While we, as Christians, are not of this world, we do live in this world and continue to develop our understandings of how these viewpoints meet.
Our faith is integrated into everything we do. Our faith impacts how we do science by rooting all our scientific endeavors in the reality of our Creator God. When done this way, all genuine scientific observations and discoveries can lead us into deeper wonder, wisdom, and worship. Our Creator God is written all over our earth. He was there in the past, exists in the present, and also knows what will happen in the future.
